Ive been in Western Michigan shooting a personal project on deer season out here and Im about half-way done. After thawing out from a chilly wind and backing up images, I wanted to share a quick image from today. Nice winter light…

I had some friends in from Minneapolis this weekend so, had to take them around town and show them a good time. After much debate, I realized that there really isn’t much outside of drinking and more drinking going on in this town unless you can be in a canoe in the summer or happen to catch some sports one night. Now, Im not complaining as a good time is always to be had but sometimes, you just need to know when to leave the camera at home. Or, in this case, drink a bunch of moonshine shots and bring it back out.
It was a long night and it ended at 11:30….
I don’t know how many folks still use business cards, at least in my line of work, but I like them. They don’t really cost all that much and are a great way to make a good first impression. Even if someone takes a quick glance and then throws it in a desk drawer, there is always that chance they will find it one day and call you up. Ive actually had it happen. Anyways, Ive been out of cards for months and months and now that I have my new branding, I got my act together and got some printed. In addition to that, I even had a custom die stamp made and had them blind debossed yesterday at K2Forma here in town. Im totally pro now.
Meet me out somewhere and Ill hand you one but in the meantime, Ill always be checking email…
Nashville has become quite the hot spot for fine dining lately and it really is changing the city for the better. Long gone are the days when you would have to really really think hard about where to take out of town guests and god forbid they come to town more than once because there just weren’t that many restaurants. Now, fast forward and there are amazing new places popping up every week and we have an honest-to-god legitimate foodie subculture here (for better or for worse).
Now, one problem with amazing food and people that appreciate it is that it can be damn hard to get reservations anywhere, at least for ones not at 5pm on a Tuesday. HUSK is probably the worst offender. Really, I can not seem to get a damn reservation – its very frustrating (1st world problem).
The solution to this is either camp out on their sidewalk and stalk the manager or get commissioned for an editorial shoot there just prior to lunch and maybe drag the shoot out a little longer than is needed… In all seriousness though, I am privileged to have awesome clients (who have to remain nameless for the time being) who give me awesome assignments.
The forthcoming images will be awesome and I just might be able to wrangle a decent reservation out of this. Wish me luck.
It’s rare when I can share assigned work as I shoot it what with embargo terms and non-disclosure limits but this week is a bit different.
I’ve been on a week-long road trip with a writer from the Guardian, the UK newspaper. We have been traveling from Chicago to Memphis by way of Indianapolis, Louisville and Nashville and the entire time we have been guided by suggestions from folks on twitter. It’s an interesting concept and is working better than expected. The only downside to this whole thing is that I have to shoot it all on my iPhone and apply borders and textures to the images. Whatever, it’s not the end of the world.
So, go check it out…

I have some really nice images coming out in the fall edition of everyones favorite southern culture magazine but, as always, can’t lay down all the cards yet. Just wanted throw a little teaser up and thank everyone involved – you know who you are.
This is a few days old now as I have been frantically trying to renovate an old 1920’s victorian home and now move into it but I need to post this because it is so cool.

I was interviewed what seems like months ago after being anonymously nominated for this piece. I think I know who it was but can’t confirm as of yet… Regardless, its a cool piece and somehow I managed not to make myself sound like a pompous ass or an idiot when answering these questions. All in all, Im flattered to be featured and the response so far has been great.
Take a look, check it out and get back to me….
If you are landing here from a link off the CNN lens blog, welcome. I can’t tell you how much exposure this is giving me so, I figured a formal hello is in order. So, please, look around, stay awhile and don’t forget to check out my full site HERE.
Party on.
Its been quite toasty here in town lately – the perfect storm of hot and humid and downright unpleasant to be working outside. So, the answer to that is to schedule a shoot in a river for late afternoon and cool off while working. Perfect.
Ive had images like these in my head for sometime now and Im glad that I had a small gap in my schedule to go out and shoot some personal work. Im going to be waiting on the rest of the 4×5 to come back from the lab but for the mean time, here is a type 55 scan and a quick digital image (had to have something to play with).
As always, more to come…
Check out some new work that I shot this weekend while braving the unwashed masses at Bonnaroo…
